The Pie method
This is not about cooking. PIE stands for, in French, "plaisir, information, embauche", which means "pleasure, information, hiring". This is an alternative way to find a job I just read about in this article How to get the job of your dreams - the Pie method (in French).
To summarise it, it is all about networking (yes, again). What the method says is : do not waste your time sending tons of e-mails, résumés, letters here and there. Don't bother answering job opportunities where there will be two or three hundred other anonymous guys answering as well.
What you have to do is to get an interview with as many people as possible, working in the field you're interested in, or even doing the very same job you're looking for. But these must not be job interviews, just informal meetings to get to know the job, and most of all, the people. Do not leave the room without two or three names of people you could interview next. They will be even eager to meet you if you come from someone they know already.
So what's the point? It has to do with 1) preparing future job interviews and 2) reputation. Meeting many people will help you to know more of the enterprise, of the work area, and will be a very good training when it gets more serious. Also, by meeting more and more people who work in the same field, recruiters will eventually get to know your name, and when your résumé will get on their desks, you will not be a stranger anymore.
That is for the theory. I'm willing to get to the practical step... The only difficult step to make in the Pie method is to meet the very first contact. Luckily, I just got an appointment next Friday. I'll keep you informed !
